GLOBAL UNDERGROUND 39 - LITHUANIA BY DAVE SEAMAN
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl97eXiDrYI
Featuring tracks and mixes from Sasha, Dubfire, Trentemoller, Gui Boratto, Boy 8 Bit, Dave Seaman, Josh Gabriel, Carl Craig, Erol Alkan, Boysnoize and many more.
After a 9 year hiatus, Dave Seaman has returned to the Global Underground stable with GU39: Lithuania. His two previous GU city compilations, Buenos Aires and Cape Town, were landmark releases that, at the time, caught both fledgling clubbing territories on the rise, ignited by the unstoppable growth of global electronic music.
With 20 years experience under his belt, Seaman remains a master of his craft. Lithuania was an easy choice for his third, long-awaited Global Underground set. He’s become one of the nation’s most popular guest DJs, with a musical approach that sits neatly with the Lithuanian club community and their fondness for deep melodic tones, and intricate techno rhythms. GU39 encapsulates this mutual appreciation.
A series of exclusive mash-ups created in Dave’s studio are among the many album highlights and CD1 begins with one of them – DJ Koze’s ‘Blume Der Nacht’ wrapped around James Teej’s ‘B4 String’, a deliciously atonal concoction of tiny burbling licks, wayward disco bass and drifting female voices. Mikroboy’s ‘Vom Leben Und Verstehen’ jerks spasmodically on its tinkling refrain. The backward accordion roll and sudden whoops of Javier Logares’s 'El Sueno Espanol' could just as easily be East European. At the end, the screech and rush of Roland M Dill’s ‘Taurine On A Sunday’ (Egbert mix) slides into the gorgeous airy refrain on Glenn Morrison’s closing ‘Triangle & Strings’, here in a Tom Middleton mix. It is an unashamedly upbeat finale.
CD2 starts with serious intent: Yousef’s ‘Come Home’, here in a hypnotic and dramatic Sasha remix. Fabrice Lig’s ‘Digital Forest’ wraps slivers of female vocals around its chattering melodies. Then Seaman flips the switch with a further mash-ups. Dubfire’s 'Rejekt' battles with Quivver’s 'Yeah Yeah' – and a mechanised army of robot rhythms keep time. Fusion F & Come T’s 'Wonder' is cut with Bomb The Bass feat. The Battle of Land & Sea’s 'Up The Mountain', with electric licks and deadpan whooshes descending into balmy melodies. It is an exquisite transition into the harsher techno of 'Vorahnung' – Seaman’s own track with Josh Gabriel. There are wilder techno moments before a Dave Seaman re-edit of Boy 8 Bit’s ‘Baltic Pine’, here in its Run Hide Survive Mix, gallops and wobbles into a final mash-up. It’s the Christian Smith mix of Carl Craig’s Detroit classic ‘At Les’ mangled into Spritzer feat. Kid A’s ‘Too Hard To Breathe’. Ready for a dreamy, emotional finale: Steve Ward’s ‘The Window Between Us & Them’.
